Intersection & Night of the Slasher
Review by Paul Preston
Welcome to Today I Watched…, a series of posts documenting my new challenge – watch a movie a day for the rest of my life. Keep coming back to TheMovieGuys.net to find out what I watch each day…and get my take on it.
When I see a movie that’s a new release in theaters or for home viewing, I’ll give it a proper review in the “Reviews”, otherwise, I’ll write about it here.
March 11, 2017 – Kong: Skull Island – catch the review of this summer movie that came out in March in the REVIEWS category of TheMovieGuys.net.
March 12, 2017 – Intersection
Today, I went to Disneyland. You ever go to Disneyland? It’s a day. Like, a whole day. There’s no “watching a movie” when you’re at Disneyland. So I thought maybe I’d catch Captain E.O. while at Disneyland, but they’ve closed it. Which…is probably OK. That movie is stuck in the ‘80s. So, today has prompted me to add a caviat to my movie-a-day goal – include short films!
Going forward, you’ll see more short films worked into the mix when I’m at an event or have a busy day. The thing about shorts is that they’re often just trying to get by. Millions hasn’t been spent to where you can air your grievances about the quality. They’re frequently just a calling card for the filmmaker so when you see posts here about shorts, I’m probably not gonna go on at length if I didn’t care much for the movie. No point in crapping on the indie filmmakers.
With that, I saw a short called Intersection today, and it didn’t do much for me! A couple of guards take up a post at an intersection of two roads in the middle of nowhere and absurd things occur. So no need to go on, but I will take a second to tell you about where I saw the movie – Itsashort.com, a website worth getting behind because people are often wondering what to do with their short. Do I put it online? Try and get it into some kind of compilation? What happens after a film festival run? Itsashort.com is a good portal to find shorts – and watch a ton of them!
March 13, 2017 – Night of the Slasher
I received a screener for this horror movie send-up, so I don’t know exactly where you can catch it, but keep your eyes open for it, it’s fun. Director Shant Hamassian’s short film is all about bombarding you with horror film clichés and having a good time with them. It begins with the scantily-clad girl dancing by herself in her living room and as she goes through the evening, it turns out she’s literally crossing the clichés off an actual list. It’s shot to give the illusion of one take and the film succeeds at that, but the movie really wins just for having the killer wear a Leonard Nimoy mask. If you get why that’s funny, you’re my hero.
