Everybody Wants Some!!

Review by Paul Preston

Welcome to Today I Watched…, a series of posts documenting my new challenge – watch a movie a day for the rest of my life. Keep coming back to TheMovieGuys.net to find out what I watch each day…and get my take on it.

When I see a movie that’s a new release in theaters or for home viewing, I’ll give it a proper review in the “Reviews”, otherwise, I’ll write about it here.

March 23, 2017 – Check Please

Check Please

I was invited to view a screener of this Check Please as it makes the rounds to a half-dozen or so film festivals. I’m so glad they went the route of making a comedy (there are fewer then you’d think in short form). This tale of a proposal gone very wrong in a restaurant is made exceptionally well. That’s coupled with acting that’s over the top (it wasn’t a full farce, so when mugging set in, it wasn’t quite in sync with the tone of the movie otherwise). There’s also a flat ending that didn’t kick in enough of a zinger to elevate the movie past just being OK, so I’ll stop myself from going on.

March 24, 2017 – Everybody Wants Some!!

This was one of my favorite movies of 2016 and I wanted to share it with my wife, Karen. She loved it, which was great news, proving that it’s not just a guy movie, even though the whole plot of the film can be summed up as “guys doin’ stuff”. Here are my thoughts, as originally presented in the 2017 Oscar Rant.

I saw this movie in October and I wish I was still watching it. There seemed to be no length for this movie that would be too long. Richard Linklater has coughed up great characters, great dialogue and no shortage of hilarious situations in his early-‘80s tale of a college student baseball team in that no-responsibilities period between arriving at college and when classes start. Jake, Beuter, Finn, Willoughby and the boys quickly became my best friends and I swear, it didn’t matter what they were doing (often something of little consequence like trying to get into a bar or driving around lip-syncing to “Rapper’s Delight”), I could watch it for hours. Linklater has once again pulled together a who-the-hell-is-that? list of actors who are magnetic. Now that I reflect on it, this might be the funniest movie of the year. You should have seen this, but good news, movies last forever, so it’s not too late.
